As a book and movie lover I love to compare movies on their book counterparts. In this blog, I’ll be semi-seriously rating the adaptions of three books.
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of those movie adaptations where I forgive them for changing the content whilst still being accurate. The book was written in letters, whereas the movie made references to them. Personally, I think that this was done well as it kept the story going even if the original medium wasn’t there!
The acting was superb and everyone WAS their characters. Charlie’s actor, Logan Lerman, was just as awkward and dorky as I imagined Charlie to be in the book. All of the actors seemed to vibe well with each other. With Emma Watson as Sam and Paul Rudd as Mr Anderson- there is no wonder why he had a crush on Sam and had English as his best subject. Book Charlie must have lucked out!
Overall I rate this an A tier or a 4/5 as a book adaption.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010)
I loved this movie as a kid even if it isn’t the best movie out there. If you watch this knowing that it is a cringy movie made for kids then it is a fun watch!
To me, Steve Zahn and Devon Bostick made two non-main characters jump out of the page more than the main characters. Steve played the dad so well! He was slapstick and fun to watch whereas in the book his character didn’t have any personality. Devon played the character of a lazy, punk rocking, older brother so well. He’s my favourite character in all of the movies to be honest. I love how both actors made them better than the source material!
Overall, I rate this an A- at 3.5/5 as a book adaption.
Little Women
I know a lot of people love Little Women (2019), but it just didn’t work for me as a book to movie adaptation. The way it kept jumping around between timelines made it harder to get into the story, especially if you’re not super familiar with the book already. I get what they were going for, but it felt a bit all over the place as it incorporated things from the other books.
Also, the sisters all looked way too old for the early parts of the story. It took me out of the movie a bit, especially since their characters are meant to grow up over time — but they already looked grown-up from the start. It just didn’t feel believable. To be honest, I may be being a bit too harsh as they all acted well. I enjoyed seeing Emma Watson and Bob Odenkirk share a screen! If it had been based on a different book- I would have had different opinions on it.
Overall, I’d give this a C+ or maybe a 2.5/5 as a book adaptation.
Thanks for reading. If there is any book to movie adaptions you would like me to review- let me know!
