An Open Letter to Queer People: You Are Loved, You Are Not Broken

Dear queer people,

This open letter is for you. It is what I wanted to say to my past self, it is what I want to say to anyone who identifies as queer, and it is most importantly for YOU.

Reader, this is the most important thing I can say to you:

You are okay, you are loved, you are safe.

Even if live seems tough and no one will support you, you will always have someone who will. Even if it doesn’t feel that way, There is always light in the darkness. You may not feel secure now but in your darkest moments, you’ll always be seen by us- by people who love you.

There is light in darkness

My light was gaming and books.

These spaces allowed me to create my experiences and feel like I was part of a community. Sims allowed me to explore my queerness, and books opened the door to learning about other identities out there. This learning curve made the way for understanding of myself and others. You can have that too. I can assure you that you can too. Everyone CAN find their own space no matter what.

Maybe your light will be a game, a book, music, art, a friend, a community, or something completely different. Whatever it is, I hope you find a space where you can breathe, be yourself, and feel like you belong.

I know at times you may feel different and broken but I want you to also remember this:

You are not broken for being who you are

Being queer isn’t wrong and it doesn’t make you broken at all. It makes you you. It makes your beauty worth showing to the world. If you aren’t queer but an ally that is okay too. We are all human on this Earth, that makes everyone the same in my eyes.

There is strength in love and joy

Some of you are surrounded by people who understand them; some of you are still searching for that person; some of you are out and proud; some of you are quietly figuring things out; some of you aren’t safe enough to say everything you know about yourself yet. None of those experiences makes you any less queer, and none makes you any less worthy of love. There is strength in it, just hold on until you find it.

Find your people, wherever you can. Hold onto the friend who lets you say the thing you’ve been afraid to say. Treasure the person who doesn’t need an explanation. Be that person for someone else when you have the strength. And please give yourself permission to experience joy.

I hope my words provide comfort.

With love,

A queer who loves you.
