October Media Review

Movies

Ghostbusters

For the spooky season I decided to rewatch a classic Halloween movie. Ghostbusters is a whacky and fun film that isn’t my favourite, but is still good. I like this movie for its distinct characters and how many ghosts there are. Sure, they ARE ghostbusters, but the types of ghosts are different. Thats really cool to me for some reason!

Creep 1+2

These were two bad but in a good way movies. I love a good campy horror movies- these were just that! There’s a lot of suspense and actually good jumpscares for ‘bad’ horror movies, so I do have to give credit for that. The character of Aaron was really intreging and somewhat captivating. Mark Duplass’ acting was phenominal in this as he made that character so himself. In my opinion he’s Art the Clown levels of good.

Back To The Future 1-3

I LOVE Back To The Future. They are some of my favourite movies of all time. The story and CGI still holds up to this day! Everything about these movies is perfect in my opinion. Everyone tells a different story that connects really well. This series of movies is one everyone needs to watch once in their lifetime- nothing I say will give you an idea of its quality. Marty McFly was charismatic and Doc Brown was the right amount of zany. I wish I could meet these characters in real life.

Clayface

This was a weird but good addition to the new DC universe. I really enjoyed the body horror aspects of Matt Hagen’s character and his character was really compelling to me. I would like to see him return to future DC movies. It might be recency bias but I think this was better than Superman. I’m excited to see what DC does with Clayface in the future! This is especially true for I’m not really enjoying Marvel too much at the moment. Thats for another blog post though!
Can I also say I want more random Rob Brydon cameos in movies? He randomly was in this and also Barbie. I love seeing him randomly.

Wildwood

Laika finally came back! After what felt like ages, Wildwood was a great welcome back from the studio. The story and animation style matched perfectly. At points I actually forgot it was stop motion animation as it looked so real. There’s so many things that came together perfectly. I feel like Oregon was made for art. The town and nature was stunning. The story also felt like it was made to be told by Laika. They do heroines really well and this was no different. If you can support Laika please do. This is THE animated movie of the year.

Games

Fall Guys

I probably played too much of this game this month! I was trying to go for the platinum trophy but got bored. I’m about three quarters of the way through so can defintely go back if I want to. The whole game is basically online mini games that change each time. I enjoy mini games, but not this many of them. For the platinum, you need to grind so thats what bored me! I wouldn’t bother if I was you.

Actual Sunlight

Actual Sunlight is a PSVita exclusive game that is a short and bitter-sweet game about depression. I would recommend playing through at least once if you’re able to. The messages it delivers is very dark but poignant. If you don’t have a vita definitely watch on YouTube if you can! Mental health awareness is needed more than ever these days and this game can help provide awareness.

Books

Things I Took From The Dark- Reece Shearsmith

Reece should go into book writing indefinetly. The way he wrote factually whilst blending in humour was something I haven’t read in a long time. The spooky stories he told through his museum were all exectlent, gripping, and scary. Every tale was pulled straught from nightmares. His drawings literally made some of them feel real. My favourute parts in this book was when we got a glimpse into the League of Gentlemen’s friendship. It was few and far in between, but was still quite cool to read. The story about the seance was worth reading. Definitely pick up if you dare.

A Fine Welcome: Othello’s Journey- Taran Matharu

This short story is from the world of Summoner by Taran Matharu. It is from the perspective of Othello, a character we meet in the main books. I found it short, sweet, and a nice read. Next month I want to start rereading the main series again so I just reread it for fun. If you also like the Summoner series I recomend reading this book, otherwise I’d skip it.

Live Shows

I’m going to do a shameless plug here and reference my other blog post I did this month. I went to London for the week and saw a lot of live shows in that week. Feel free to read it here if you want to.
